Much of the water supplied to Auckland come from reservoirs in the Hunua Ranges. From this, I hypothesised two facts:
1) The Hunua ranges have lots of hills to provide run-off to the reservoirs.
2) The Hunua Ranges experience a lot of rain.
Both of these hypotheses have been borne out by experience, with the inaugural TDR being very wet, windy, and very hilly.
The start time of 9 am for the 110 km and 9.30 am for the 30 km races are welcome for those who are not so keen to get up earlier than necessary. Possibly an earlier start time would work better on a hot day with less chance of sun protection, but in 2010, little sun was experienced and the start time therefore perfect.
The course is very windy (in both senses of the word) , and as the name suggests, very hilly too. The route is clearly marked. Some of the road surfaces leave much to be desired, although there were a fair number of road works too, indication perhaps that the local district council is attempting to redress the issue.
I saw no mountain bikes during the 110 km event, but there were a fair number of hybrids, and they may have handled the rough surfaces better than the numerous bikes that I saw with punctures. Rescue vehicles were in plentiful supply which was good to see.
Overall, a very good race and one that is likely to get even better each year. Hopefully there will be a little more at the end in the way of post-race nutrition at future events, but in the meantime, plan to pack your own.

Triathlon events for the beginner trying their first duathlon/triathlon through to the standard distance used in the Olympics.
If you have a reasonable level of fitness and you want to try a triathlon, then start with the Sprint distance, which is challenging without being exhausting.
Tri boxes are allowed. Wetsuits are used by the majority of competitors. If you use a mountain bike rather than a road bike, you will be in the minority, but certainly not the only one. I've used a mountain bike myself, and set a time that I found difficult to beat when using my road bike. Traffic tends to be minimal.
The Mission Bay course is flat and fast. The Maraetai course is quite a bit hillier, although recent changes mean that the steepest hill has been removed from the run course making the whole course a few minutes faster than it was. In general though, assuming similar weather conditions, the Mission Bay course will give you a better time, while Maraetai will test your fitness more.
Mission Bay is reasonably close to central Auckland, while Maraetai is quite a bit further out (45 minutes to an hour from Mission Bay).

One of the tougher half marathons. Off-road events are generally slower than on-road, and this one is no exception. There are steep, hilly bits, especially around the 16 km mark where the Never-ending hill is found (my own name for it). Run from Tauranga to Mount Maunganui, but has been run in the reverse direction. Tauranga to Mount Maunganui is the better direction as running around the base of Mount Maunganui is easier when the 12 km walkers are not already walking the track as is the case when the start is at Mount Maunganui.
The course is nearly completely flat apart from running the base track of Mount Maunganui which has a few small up and downs. There are some scenic parts, especially around the Mount, but the rest of it is less scenic though the cement farm, and along the beach road (the beach is hidden behind the dunes for most of the run).
Fairly quick route, and a PB is definitely possible as long as you don't get trapped by 5 walkers walking side by side on the Mount track.

The first 19 km of this race are reasonably flat with the odd hill. At the 19 km mark, you will encounter Mount Wellington at which point you can choose to attempt to run up it, thereby using up all of your remaining energy, or walk it, waving cheerily to the folks who are trying to run it as you pass them.
The last km is extremely enjoyable, but don't expect to set a PB on this half marathon.

Course refreshments Water on most volcano summits.
Post-race refreshments Water and sports drink.

Prizegiving None from memory. Random spot prizes are allocated as you finish the event.
Finisher's medal No.
Competed in 2006, 2009.

5 or 7 volcanoes for individuals. 12 volcanoes for teams. The challenge is to reach the summit of each of the assigned volcanoes and have your race number marked before finishing the event. There is no set route, and to set a good time, it is essential to prepare well beforehand, with a map and work out the best route.
This is a fun event as the volcanoes can be knocked off in any order, and the winner isn't necessarily the fastest runner, but the runner with the best route. Suggested routes are available on the event web site, but small improvements can usually be made to these.
It is a good idea to have some cash, as because there is no set route, there are no officials covering the route, and you may need to catch a taxi if you injure yourself.

Seduced by photos of beautiful lake-side running while looking at the peaks of Ruapehu and Ngarahoe, reality was a freezing, rain-sodden half marathon at the end of which I could not feel my feet.
This one is great for mid-winter training, but if the weather is bad, then it can be pretty miserable. Prepare for the inevitable cold, (running gloves are a great idea), and make sure you have keys to your accomodation to be able to have a hot shower soon after the event.
The solid chocolate fish at the finish line was a highlight.
The course itself is reasonably flat wit a few gradual rises. For the most part, it is a fast course.

Details
The biggest half-marathon/marathon in New Zealand. This one is famous for allowing runners to cross the Auckland Harbour Bridge by foot, which is usually not permitted, although hopefully pedestrian access is not too far away.
This is usually a very nice half marathon to run, although with the sheer number of competitors, a PB is unlikely unless you manage to get a starting position near the front of the crowd.
There are some hills, especially from Devonport to Takapuna, Northcote Shopping Centre to Onewa Road, and of course the Bridge itself, but for the most part the joy of being part of such a large event will carry you through it.
Crossing the Bridge is obviously a highlight, but also around the 19 km mark, when running past the tank farm and looking to the left across Waitemata Harbour to Marine Parade in Devonport and the start line gives a strong sense of satisfaction.
Race pack bags will be transported from the start line to the finish line by Pace Couriers, which is great to get the warm clothing from start to finish. The event begins just after 6, so warm clothing is required initially.
Queues for portaloos are long, and if you haven't reached the front of a queue by the time it starts, you may be better off running the first 2.5 km to the public toilets at the first drink station.
If it is wet, pop a hole in the bottom of a plastic rubbish bag, a couple of holes in the side for your arms, and you have a thermal rain coat until the start which can be ditched at the first rubbish bin.
There always seem to be a large number of competitors (almost invariably women), who run the event with a warm heavy jacket tied around their waist. Don't even consider it - the chafing will be present for a week. Take/buy a disposable warm garment if you need to and ditch it when the race starts.
The marathon follows the same course as the half marathon., but at Victoria Park heads out towards Kohimarama before returning to Victoria Park.

Easily the most fun 10 km in New Zealand. A lovely country run unlike most others that I have raced. You know that you have a special race when the primary sponsor is Mrs Wilkinson. I don't generally run events shorter than 16 km, but I do make an exception for this one. The first 7 kms are reasonably flat with small rises here and there. Between 7-9 km are two steep hills, and the last km is all downhill and very fast.
The afternoon tea is fabulous, and the price is really cheap too - about $12 per competitor.

The Dual Half Marathon and Marathon
Location Motutapu and Rangitoto Islands

Type Run or walk
Distances 21.1 km and 42.2 km. (Mountain Bike options also available).
Time of Year March
Goodie Bag Reusable 2XU drawstring bag.
Course refreshments Frequent stations with water, sports drink, bananas, and flat Coke at the last station.
Post-race refreshments Bananas, water and sports drink.
Post race details Finishes near a safe swimming beach on Motutapu Island. Many competitors don't bother stopping at the finish line, and continue straight into the water.
Prizegiving Standard.
Finisher's medal No. (Possibly for the marathon, but I didn't do that.)
Competed in 2009
Details
A very tough course. Could benefit from a staggered start as the track quickly becomes single file up hill, so once one person decides to walk, things really start to slow down.
The ascent to the summit of Rangitoto is fairly tough, but it is actually the flatter coastal track around Rangitoto that is slowest. Single file running is required and passing is difficult leading to a very slow pace at times. There are few places to pass other competitors along the entire route.
I saw a couple of nasty accidents, and care should be taken, especially watching out for tree roots and rocky terrain underfoot. Looking down while running can be beneficial to stepping well, but can also lead to nasty head injuries when you fail to see the low overhanging tree branch.
This probably won't become a regular event for me, but it is certainly well worth doing. Proceeds go to the Motutapu Restoration Trust.
The first ferry back to Auckland tends to be very full, and a wait of several hours before being able to cram onto a ferry can occur. If you can, plan to enjoy the afternoon there, and catch a later ferry. The water is lovely for swimming.
You will never set a PB for either distance unless it is your first event of this distance. If it is your first event, you may never do the distance again!

Course is a bit up and down, and the last couple of km is mostly up. However, it is possible to set a fast time regardless. The course feels quite rural, with minimal traffic. The run around Herald Island is especially pleasant. Much of the run is on road rather than pavemnet, so tends to be fast.

First half of course is very flat. Second half is quite hilly, but still possible to set a personal best for the distance.
Unusual among half marathons in that it has a staggered start with slower runners starting earlier than faster runners with a graduated start in 5 minute intervals. This is designed so that all competitors should finish around 10.30 am leaving only half an hour to wait for prize-giving.
An advantage of the staggered start, is to run in the wave that is 5 or 10 minutes faster than what you think that you will do, i.e the wave that starts 5 or 10 minutes slower than what you have been told. You can then use those around you as pace-setters and is a benefit if trying to set a personal best.
A disadvantage of the staggered start is that fast runners who do not usually experience congestion while running, will find themselves passing more runners than they ordinarily would.

Rotorua Half Ironman
Location Blue Lake, Rotorua.
Website http:://www.half.co.nz/
Type Half Ironman Triathlon.
Distances 2 km swim, 90 km cycle, 21.1 km run.
Time of Year December
Goodie Bag Reasonably light, but has an awesome cycle shirt. This will possibly change from 2010 as the event becomes entirely charity oriented.
Course refreshments Water at the 30 km point, and water and Heed at the 60 km points on the cycle. (Standard bottle swap). Water and Heed and cookies!!! at aid stations on the run which are encountered around 8 times on the run.
Post-race refreshments Water, Heed, and beer.
Post race details Throw your weary body into the cold waters of the Blue Lake to aid recovery.
Prizegiving Takes place around 2.30 in the afternoon. Reasonably decent prizes including wet suits and soft toys. Average number of spot prizes.
Finisher's medal Yes.
Competed in 2009 and 2010.
Details
Bike can be racked on the morning of the event.
Tri boxes are allowed - the transition area is quite large.
Swim - The Blue Lake is not as clear as expected, and the bottom can only be seen a few metres from shore. The course markings can be difficult to see and it is very easy to stray from the course. Best to note a tall landmark prior to the start and make for that. Women start later then men, so if you are a slow male swimmer, expect to be swum over by female competitors.
Cycle - 10 metre drafting rule is enforced. The cycle route starts with a long hill, then fast downhill to Rotorua. The course is reasonably flat to Hell's Gate, then is hilly to the lakes. Around the lakes is pretty fast, but the return hill just short of Hell;s Gate is a killer. Flat again into Rotorua, then another killer of a hill to the Blue Lake. The last km is fast and downhill. Motor traffic is usually pretty light.
Run - About half of the run is off-road and in the shade, but watch for tree roots. The first part winds around the Blue Lake getting steadily steeper. Then down towards Lake Tarawera, before a hot section out to the Gun Club and back. Along the road to the Lake Tarawera lookout point, before returning to the Blue Lake for one last lap of it. The off-road nature of the course makes it easier on the soles of the feet, but the hilliness can be deceptive. The cookies at the aid stations are wonderful and should be consumed at every opportunity.
The event will be entirely a charity event from 2010. Race entry can be free if enough sponsorship is raised.
Make sure that suntan lotion is applied. You will need it as this traditionally gets very hot weather.
Overall, a very good course which is extremely scenic, but one of the tougher half Ironman courses. Wear the cycle shirt with pride after completing this one.

Type Half Ironman Triathlon.
Distances 2 km swim, 90 km cycle, 21.1 km run.
Time of Year December
Goodie Bag Pretty decent. Cycle arm warmers, race number holder (for use during the cycle and run), cap.
Course refreshments Water and Balance at the 30 and 60 km points on the cycle. (Standard bottle swap). Water and Balance at two aid stations on the run which are encountered 4 times each - effectively 8 stations on the run.
Post-race refreshments Water and Balance.
Post race details Throw your weary body into the ice cold waters of Lake Taupo to aid recovery.
Prizegiving Takes place later in the afternoon once everyone has had a shower and lunch. Reasonably decent prizes. Average number of spot prizes.
Finisher's medal Yes, and it is very nice - a different shape to the usual circular medals.
Competed in 2009.
Details
Bike needs to be checked and racked the evening prior to the event and stays on site overnight guarded by security. Wetsuit needs to be cleaned from the risk of Didymo at the same time. If it is going to be wet overnight, some large plastic rubbish bags to cover the fiddly elements of your bike may be worth using.
Tri boxes are not allowed - need to take a minimalist approach to your gear. Use plastic bags if it is wet.
Swim - not as cold as expected. Lake Taupo is very clear and the bottom of the lake can be seen right around the entire course. The course markings are excellent and it is very easy to stay on course as the next bouy is never more than 100 metres from the last. Teams start later then individuals, so if you are a slow individual swimmer, expect to be swum over by team competitors.
Cycle - 7 metre drafting rule is enforced. The easy way to judge 7 metres is the length of the pain strips on the road. The cycle route starts with a long hill, then undulating to Reporoa. There is a long stretch of uphill between the 70 and 80 km marks on the return journey, but the last 10 km is mostly downhill and fast. Motor traffic is pretty light.
Run - Long flat sections with the odd rise here and there, but nothing to worry about really. The course is two laps. Much of it is on pavement and can get a bit narrow with spectators very close, but with a bit of care should not be an issue.
Overall, a good course and reasonably fast. Probably not as fast as the Port of Tauranga half Ironman, but not far off it.

Well run event. Well-priced at $35 entry for the 13 and 25 km options, plus $30 return for the ferry journey to the start line and from the finish area from Auckland.
Suntan lotion was provided on the ferry by the organisers which was a nice touch. All courses are very hilly.
The 13 km race is mostly the first half of the 25 km race; the 12 km race is the second half of the 25 km event. The 12 km event is quite a bit less hilly than the 13 km event and therefore quite a bit easier. The first half of the 25 km event is extremely hilly, beginning with a long climb, followed by a steep descent to sea level before climbing again on another long climb.
The 25 km event is the first run that I have entered where I have voluntarily walked parts of it. Some of the hills are very steep and the summit of them is a long way from the bottom. It is not an easy run.
It is important to hydrate early as this run can get very hot. I am glad that I have completed this, but I'm not sure that it will be a regular event for me.
A nice and unique touch was the tent at the end containing not only printouts of the results, but also professionally printed out photos of competitors taken along the route. These were free of charge for the competitor to take any photos of him or herself. Much nicer than having to order from a sports photographer's website. Kudos to the organisers.
